Prologue

As the Granolith flew through the sky, a distant rumble ripped through the calm, silent day. As Max, Liz, Isabel, Michael, Maria and Kyle all stood staring after their unknown enemy, the wind whipped across the faces.

Liz face was emotionless, looking like a lost child who had no one to count on. She could feel herself being pulled into Max's embrace, and she heard his loving words. Her heart was happy, knowing that Max still loved her and that she could be with him once again, but her mind was telling her otherwise. He had slept with the girl she hated the most, she was carrying his child that should have been hers, she had killed her best friend and Max was now asking her to take her back. Her body was in overload. Her heart and mind were screaming different things and the final push was the words that echoed around the caves "I have to save my son".

She could feel the faintness, the exhaustion and disgust. She hadn't slept in weeks, months even properly, ever since she and Max had been estranged. She hadn't been eating correctly and it was all too much. The world went spinning across her eyes, right before the blackness engulfed her and she fell to the floor.

Chapter 1

When Liz rose from her deep sub-conscience, she found herself lying on Michael's sofa in his apartment, with her group of friends nearby talking quietly. Liz could tell Maria was angry with Max, thinking that it was his entire fault that she was in this state.

"Max what do you mean you didn't know this was going on? Oh I forgot. You completely ignored all of us, while you were getting it on with the alien psycho bitch from hell. Max did you not notice that all Liz ever did was try to find out what happened to Alex? She was so crushed that no one believed her, especially you. Liz was determined to find out the truth, that your precious lunatic wife murdered our best friend. Max I'm sorry but... you really haven't helped her health in the past few months. She... I mean look at her Max. She physically and mentally tired. I don't think she can go on much longer. She needs rest and Liz doesn't need any more hassle. From you or your scary, obsessive gerbil whore." And with that Maria stormed out the room claiming that she needed some fresh air. As the door hit the wall behind, Michael followed her muttering unsaid thoughts to himself.

Max, Isabel and Kyle all stood in awe of the words that Maria had said to Max. His mind was in turmoil. Max knew that it would be best for Liz if he gave her the space she needed, but some reason he felt like he couldn't leave her side. That he couldn't let her leave her again. It even felt like a part of him had been restored after many hundreds of years, that the longing for the part of him had been returned and was even stronger. He sighed out loud, and Kyle decided it was probably best if he went home to narrate the tale to his father, and return to leave them in some privacy.

"Max?" Kyle walked up to Max, who was staring out of the window, the morning sun highlighting his tired face. Ever since he had discovered that Tess was pregnant he hadn't been able to sleep. His dreams were scattered with distorted images of Tess and the Skins out to attack him, using his son as bait for himself. If only then he had known how true that had been. He hated himself for doing this. For ruining everyone's lives. It was all his fault that this had happened.

Still his mind wandered over why it had even occurred. He didn't love Tess. He felt for her as a friend, a companion at the time they had slept together, he had even told Liz that. Max had always felt that when he did lose his virginity it would be with Liz, because he loved her. Not some woman that he didn't love or trust completely, a few days after getting together with her. It just wasn't like him. All he could think of at the moment was his hatred for Tess, his concern for Liz and the blame he placed upon himself. When Kyle spoke to him, his thoughts were torn and his weary eyes went to face the guy that after his discovery, he respected and thought of as a true friend.

"Yes Kyle? Is Liz alright?" Kyle looked sympathetically into his deep amber eyes, and felt his sorrow for the young man who already had far too much responsibility on his shoulders.

"I think I should go now. You know tell my father and all. If there's any change to Liz you'll let me know won't you?" Max nodded his head weakly and returned to stare out of the window.

While still staring he asked the question that had been eating away at him for so long. "Kyle? Why did Liz ask you to set it up for me to think that the two of you had slept together? What was so urgent that she felt that she had to push me away?" Kyle sighed. Of all the questions that Max had to ask, it was the one he didn't know the answer to.

"Max. I don't know. She didn't tell me. All she said was that she didn't want to talk about why she did it, but you have to believe me nothing happened. We had our underwear on and we never even touched. And believe me, when you left she looked devastated. She couldn't even say anything. I just left her, on her balcony staring at the sky. If I could help you, you know I would."

Max's head was spinning. He knew he couldn't burden Liz just yet with the answer he so desperately needed, and his only other source didn't have the information he needed. He was still in shock from the fact that he had a son, he had nearly killed Tess who had turned out to be evil, and that somehow he had to find a way to rescue his son from the clutches of their enemy Khivar. Once again he showed hardly any response to Kyle, so his friend left him and Liz alone, losing hope on Max at the moment.

When the door slammed shut, Max realized he was all alone with Liz. He twisted his head round, to see Liz peacefully resting on Michael's sofa. He quietly made his way over the old sofa, watching his feet to not make any noise, so to rouse Liz. She needed her rest. His hand went out to her face, and at his first touch she flinched slightly, but resumed her position so as to not let on to Max that she was awake. She couldn't face him just yet, and especially not alone. Two of his fingers gently twisted themselves round Liz's long, chestnut hair, and he sighed contentedly. He hadn't been this near to Liz in so long.

"Liz. I'm so sorry. I know that knowing me you've had to put up with a lot. You've risked a lot, and you have constantly been helping us and caring for us. It's my entire fault that I have ruined yours, and everyone else's lives. If I hadn't of trusted Tess, Alex might still be alive and I wouldn't have to race after her trying to rescue my son. It was a mistake. Let me assure you of that. I never meant for any of this to happen. I'd just like to say thank you, for everything you've done, and for having placed a lot of burden on your shoulders, I'm sorry. I know words can't help right now, and I'm going to give you the space that you need, but... I'll be waiting for you Liz. No matter how long it is I'll wait for you. I'll fight for you and protect you, and I'll never leave you again, because I love you. I just needed you to know that. And I know that you may be asleep, but you should always have the memory deep inside of you. That you'll be able to hear me from deep within your dreams, and you'll always have that with you."

And at the end of his speech he softly placed a light kiss upon her forehead, pulled the blanket over her and quietly made his way back over to his window, not noticing the solitary tear that had escaped from Liz's brown eyes.
